Solar Energy Systems: How They Work. The sun is already generating huge amounts of energy. Why not put it to work in your own home? With the Lennox® SunSource® Energy System we offer at Daniel's Heating - Cooling & Electric in Orrville, you can decrease your dependence on oil and gas and see lower utility bills. So how exactly does it work? The simplest way to explain a solar energy system is that the system uses solar modules, which are composed of photovoltaic (PV) cells, to gather energy from the sun and convert it to electricity. This electricity will then power light, appliances and electrical devices in your home. Grid-tied PV systems Grid-tied PV systems are very common and the most affordable for residential applications. The SunSource Energy System we carry is grid-tied, which means it’s connected to your utility company’s power grid or power stations. Grid-tied lets you use your solar energy system to power your home. At times when the system isn’t generating electricity, your home will receive power through the utility grid. Additionally, when your system produces an excess amount of electricity, it will be fed back into the grid through a process called net-metering. With net-metering, your meter spins forward if you’re using electricity from the grid and backward when you’re putting your SunSource System’s electricity back into the grid. *Note: Most rebates and incentives that make a solar energy system more affordable are only available when your system is grid-tied. Stand-alone PV systems are also available for those in remote areas without utility service, but they cost a lot more. A stand-alone system is not tied to a utility grid and provide for the entirety of a home’s energy consumption needs. Ready to go solar?
